ABSTRACT

Microbes are tiny cell factories for the production of commercially important secondary metabolites. Biosurfactants present one of the major metabolites with enormous industrial, biomedical, and environmental potential. Production of biosurfactants from renewable resources offers a sustainable approach; however, cost-effective downstreaming strategies for the recovery of biosurfactants are yet to be explored. This chapter reviews recent trends in production and application of biosurfactants, as well as future perspectives and challenges that are still to be addressed.
