ABSTRACT

Various electrochemical treatments are methods used for removal of organic and inorganic impurities from fresh water, potable water and wastewater. The most usual methods are: electrocoagulation, electroflotation, electrochemical oxidation, electrochemical reduction and electrodeposition. Electrochemical technologies are a promising alternative for the treatment of wastewaters containing organic pollutants. The effluent of the wastewater treatment plant using the technology can be reused safely for many purposes. Tools and methodologies are being developed to quickly quantify and characterize the wastewater to be treated, on a site-specific basis. Electrochemical oxidation is mainly used for degradation of aromatic compounds, pesticides, paints, industrial pollutants, pharmaceuticals waste and other organic substances. Electrolysis basins have two types of electrolysis basin according to purpose: an electro-oxidation basin and an electroflotation basin. The effectiveness of electrochemical approaches depends strongly on the electrode materials and cell parameters. The use of high performance anodic materials can also achieve high efficiency and lower the operating cost.
