ABSTRACT

The consideration of user-suggested solutions is performed through the lens of selected sustainability principles for water efficiency in buildings. This chapter focuses on water supply in buildings/facilities. For the purpose of the study, an existing perspective, the 5R Principle is adopted, through which water efficiency is explored in selected buildings. The 5R principle was applied to the user-suggested solutions. Sustainability or sustainable development is defined as wholesome development that achieves balanced development in terms of addressing the three broad areas of environmental, economic, and social development. The interpretation of sustainability in the built environment leads to sustainable construction. South Africa faces a serious threat of acute shortage of potable water and the lingering threat of natural water degradation due to natural circumstances and the impact of human activities. Educational buildings within a tertiary institution in the Johannesburg area of South Africa were investigated for the study.
