ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses theory will be minimal and only typical methods or instruments of size measurement. The average particle sizes calculated from the data obtained by the sedimentation, light scattering, and diffusion measurements will not necessarily coincide each other. The particle size distribution will be determined from many particles with different sizes. The size of moving particles in a liquid or gas and on a conveyor is detected by the image capture such as a Charge Coupled Device or Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor device, and analyzed as the projected area diameter. Particles in air or liquid are forced to flow into the measuring zone of their scattering light. Sedimentation method is based on the settling of a single sphere under gravitational or centrifugal fields. In impactors, the particles in gas are passed through a nozzle and made to interact normally with a plane surface.
