ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces in-situ nanoparticle preparation process with surface modification methods for dispersion control of nanoparticles in liquid. Powder has a large specific surface area, which plays an important role in its overall properties. The purpose of surface modification is to change the surface properties of powders, thus leads to higher functions of them. One category for chemical modification on a particle surface is the modified structure, a molecular or nanometer scaled layer structure was generated on particle surface. The surfactant capped nanoparticles which were synthesized by in-situ surface modification procedure can also be further modified in order to tune their surface properties to design dispersion stability in organic solvent. Surface chemical modification is also a useful technique to improve the stability of nano- and fine particles in various liquid media. The optimum adsorbed group of surfactant and polymer dispersant depended on the molecular structure and material of particles.
