ABSTRACT

With the recent development of new advanced materials, the need for advanced manufacturing techniques has become inevitable. NiTinol is one of the recently developed smart materials that find applications in many fields such as aerospace, automobile, fashion, and biomedical industries. NiTinol belongs to a class of smart materials that have many unique properties such as superelasticity, shape memory effect, and biocompatibility. However, because of the difficulties in manufacturing processes, its applications are restricted. Of the various manufacturing processes used in converting NiTinol to the required shape, welding is one of the widely used processes. Among the various welding processes available, laser welding is widely used in joining NiTinol shape memory alloys. In this chapter, an attempt is made to give an overview of the current position and future opportunities in laser welding of NiTinol shape memory alloys.
