ABSTRACT
In the face of soil degradation and other serious ethical and environmental problems, a growing number of respected scientists and religious leaders around the world recognize that solutions require collaboration. By engaging both science and religion, the Gustavus Academy dispels the notion that science and religion are enemies, positively impacts students, and motivates them to make a difference in the world. In the case of the degradation of soil, we were able to build on biblical passages about the care of the earth and our connection to it as well as to use science to create a deeper understanding of the problem and the abundant life that fills the soil. When young people have the opportunity to reflect on their core values and beliefs while learning about scientific and religious responses to serious ethical challenges, they are able to articulate more clearly why they care and are empowered to take action.
