ABSTRACT

Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) is a major hospitalacquired infection. Millions of people suffer from this disease annually. Proteus mirabilis is a dimorphic organism that is predominantly associated with crystalline biofilm formation and encrustation in urinary catheter. This review addresses the orchestral performance of P. mirabilis with various virulence factors in the process of encrustation. The influence of pH on the shape and planes of struvite crystals were elaborated. It explores how silver and other nano weapons are exploited to win over the micro enemy by targeting the different stages of crystalline biofilm formation. The mechanism of silver nanomaterial in reducing the biofilm and its limitations are also discussed. The advantages of functionalizing Foley catheter with an array of bioactive compounds by layer-by-layer assembly was emphasized in nutshell.
