ABSTRACT

304The intelligible driving force of nanotechnology-based coatings for corrosion protection can be attributed significantly to the role of the nanodispersoids. This class of materials has provided value-added functionalities in products meant for corrosion protection of metals, alloys, and metallic surfaces from innovations in the area of coatings and linings technology, as well as novel inhibitors and pigments. The multifunctional role discussed herein exhibited by these nanodispersoids is influenced by their functionalization and mode of dispersion in the polymer matrix. These nanoenhancers have greatly improved efficiency and aesthetics of polymeric coatings along with sustainability in the prevention and control of corrosion on structural and engineering materials of great value. This chapter aims at providing an overview of corrosion-inhibiting polymer nanocomposite coatings with particular attention to the role of nanodispersoids in corrosion resistant coatings and their smart characteristics.
