ABSTRACT

Products that must be operated within a safe pressure range should warn or protect users against underinflation and overinflation. One solution to tire overinflation also addresses the problem of underinflation, which can also lead to adverse events such as automobile roll-over accidents. The solution is an automatic system that maintains tire pressure by increasing tire pressure up to a prescribed level and then releasing excess pressure created by a tire heating up. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission actually had to issue a recall on one type they deemed to be dangerous. “The fitness balls were determined to pose a risk from overinflation which was causing them to burst without warning during use, thereby tossing the exerciser to the ground.” The publicized fix involved revised instructions regarding proper inflation and a caution to measure the ball’s size to prevent overinflation.
