ABSTRACT

Products used in healthcare environments, around food, or around vulnerable populations should flght against the spread of bad bacteria that can lead to bacterial infections and illnesses. When a person contracts an infection, the body’s immune system goes to work, possibly with the assistance of antibiotics. However, the medical community is increasingly concerned with the growing number and virulence of drug-resistant bacteria. Prevention of bacterial infection is an ongoing battle in numerous environments. Many products—especially those in hospitals and those designed for infants—can be designed with smooth, easily wipeable surfaces, devoid of crevasses that can harbor bacteria. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the US is working diligently on a “National Strategy to Combat Antibiotic Resistance” based on some primary efforts: Slow or prevent emergence of resistant bacteria, resistant infections and Strengthen national surveillance efforts and Improve collaboration with international organizations.
