ABSTRACT

The products work by sending a signal to a base station that can then communicate with a central facility to summon help to the stricken individual. Certain products should enable users to call for help in an emergency, or they should do so automatically. From 1988 to 2000, many highways were equipped with emergency call boxes used to report accidents and seek other emergency services. The boxes have largely been phased out by the proliferation of cellphones. Interestingly, cellphones themselves have an emergency call feature. Another type of emergency call device is the personal locater beacon. The avalanche RECCO system is often used to find people buried in snow. Another type of personal locater beacon is integrated into the high-end Breitling Emergency watch. The challenge is to ensure that emergency call functions can be activated easily in an emergency but not actuated unintentionally, causing false alarms.
