ABSTRACT

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a condition characterized by impaired glucose metabolism affecting 463 million adults worldwide in 2019. T2D has several consequences if left untreated. These include cardiovascular diseases, nerve and kidney damage, and potential loss of vision and blindness. T2D arises from a variety of genetic and lifestyle factors, and chief among these factors is diet. Several studies have provided evidence for the role of a healthy diet in the prevention of T2D. Specifically, high consumption of whole grains, nuts, legumes, fruits, and vegetables and low consumption of unprocessed and processed red meats and sugar-sweetened beverages have been linked to lower incidence of T2D in several populations.
