ABSTRACT

When the United Nations (UN) Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights were endorsed by the UN Human Rights Council in 2011, former special representative of UN Secretary General Professor John Ruggie proclaimed that the era of declaratory corporate social responsibility (CSR) was over. What he meant was that voluntary CSR was no longer an option and that companies now had to develop and continuously implement a process of due diligence. This expression was coined after the term used in the financial sector. It means that all reasonable steps are taken to verify the good standing of an investment.
