ABSTRACT

Todays, liquid crystals, as a distinct phase of matter, are widely used in various field of science. The growing importance of these groups of materials is related to their specific ordering characteristics. There are different types of liquid crystals and their classification is based on their orientational and positional ordering characteristics. The most common and widely studied ones are nematic liquid crystals and their dielectric properties are investigated in this chapter. According to our studies, nematics with orientational order characteristics show different behaviors in parallel and perpendicular directions to externally applied fields. Moreover, these behaviors are highly dependent on molecular constituents, their chemical structures, and the properties of applied external fields. Therefore, the investigation of dielectric properties of nematic liquid crystals will be useful for increasing their applications in various science and technology.
