ABSTRACT

Researchers have been stepping up their work on biomimetic engineering (biomimetics), a field focused on introducing high-efficiency and high-performance biofunctions into material design. More and more articles on biomimetic engineering have been reported every year, and expectations that the industry will develop practical applications for such are likewise on the rise. This chapter focuses on a Teoriya Resheniya Izobreatatelskikh Zadach (TRIZ) offshoot known as Bio-TRIZ, a new concept put forth by former University of Bath professor Julian F. V. Vincent and his associates. The aim of Bio-TRIZ is to bring high-efficiency biofunctions found in nature into TRIZ's 40 problem-solving principles and create systems from this idea. The Bio-TRIZ database user can search for information about prior research as they develop their own product in order to optimize it. The user can also search the biomimetic product inventory across a variety of fields such as health, sports, and architecture.
