ABSTRACT

Since the independence of the country, India has made rapid strides in agriculture by achieving green revolution during the mid-1960s that enhanced cereal production by five times, white revolution during the 1970s that enhanced milk production by seven times, and blue revolution during the mid-1970s that enhanced fish production by nine times. We have been moving steadily for achieving horticulture revolution since the last three decades by enhancing horticultural production to the tune of 11 times. Economic Survey 2015-2016 of Government of India had strongly recognized this growth in the horticulture sector.

Therefore, this article emphasized on the role of horticulture R&D in achieving sustainable development and thus will be dwelling on the drivers for horticulture R&D growth, besides technological advancements and their impact on horticulture production, and productivity resulting in creating more livelihood opportunities and promoting income of small farmers.
