ABSTRACT
This chapter is intended to serve as a basic guide to interpret band positions and spectra–structure correlation for the near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. It is designed to be a set of practical tables and figures for locating absorption bands in the NIR spectra. It is not meant to be comprehensive, but useful as a field or laboratory guide for the identification of structural groups when observing specific locations of absorption bands. The text is divided into six subsections, namely, introduction, spectral response and concentration of molecules, nomenclature of molecular band vibrations, band types and relative intensities, interpretive spectroscopy, and tables and figures for spectral comparisons. The tables and figures are listed alphabetically by functional groupings and also by wavelength groupings from 1142 nm to 2540 nm.
