ABSTRACT

Human beings have been depending upon the products from nature to treat common diseases. Using plants and their products is an ancient practice, and it protects our health. The majority of herbal medicines have shown antibacterial, anticancer, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. Phytopharmaceuticals are the mixtures of the compounds derived from the plant source and that can be used as medicine. Plants or part of the plants have been used as herbal medicine to treat diseases for a very long time. Even though many research findings have shown treatment of common illnesses by herbal medicine, still there is a necessity to develop novel phytopharmaceuticals to control dreadful diseases and illnesses in the world. This chapter reviews the importance of pharmaceutical crops, their applications and methods of extraction of herbal medicine and their role in treating common illnesses.
