ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a survey of all the cases of gastroschisis managed within the 28 neonatal surgical units in the United Kingdom and Ireland from a predicted birth cohort of 1.1 million. It provides a comprehensive picture of current United Kingdom (UK) and Ireland practice for gastroschisis and a national benchmark. The British Association of Paediatric Surgeons-Congenital Anomaly Surveillance System was a collaboration between Oxford obstetric epidemiologists led by Marian Knight and the national organisation of UK and Irish paediatric surgeons to determine snapshots of outcomes of several common neonatal surgical conditions, such as diaphragmatic hernias, posterior urethral valves etc. It is comprehensive national dataset that actually does not conclude on what is the best of a range of possible surgical options for the condition. The use of a preformed silo had just been introduced into UK practice but was becoming more widespread, though operative primary fascial closure was still the most popular option.
