ABSTRACT

Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a complex multifactorial disease characterized by persistent fatigue of unknown origin for at least 6 months, post-exertional malaise and other chronic symptoms that severely impact patients’ quality of life. The etiology of ME/CFS is unclear. This chapter explores updated evidence of multisystem involvement and contributing environmental and lifestyle factors in this condition. Understanding the evolving pathophysiologic and treatment body of knowledge in ME/CFS will help clinicians diagnose and understand this challenging condition.
