ABSTRACT

Medicinal plants and herbal drugs play a key role in the prevention of chronic diseases and healing due to containing plant-based chemical constituents. They are considered to be a rich repository of many drugs and they are allied for development of crude drugs and formulas for pharmacological importance. The plant-based drugs and their products contribute significant value in financial growth to national economy. Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb. is one of the important timber species, native to the Indian subcontinent. It is a major forest element in Indian forests. It is remarkably significant in Indian traditional medicine due to the presence of biological compounds to heal and prevent many diseases, which was proven by traditional healing methods. This review reveals the chemical constituents of the plant, pharmacological importance, response as antidiabetic and other potential uses of drug in therapeutic and traditional knowledge. In addition to that, the systematic position of the plant, cultivation practices and utilization of plant in future prospective to the next generation are provided in this review.
