ABSTRACT

Many organizations have invested in a wide variety of security technologies and appliances to protect their business assets. Some of these projects have taken their toll on the organization’s IT budget in the form of time, money, and the number of personnel required to implement and maintain them. Although each of these projects may be critical to an organization’s overall security plan, IT managers and administrators continue to overlook one of the most fundamental and cost-effective security practices availabledirectory and file permission security. This chapter addresses the dilemma created by this issue, the threats it poses, offers potential solutions, and then discusses several operating system utilities that can aid the practitioner in managing permissions.
