ABSTRACT

The laparoscopic approach is ideal for the sacral colpopexy. The magnification and digital zoom allow the surgeon, assistant, operating nurses, anesthetist, and trainees excellent visualization of the operating field. This has several advantages: it facilitates better exposure of the surgical field and the ability of assistants to predict the next steps of the surgery, improves teaching of trainees and students, is more inclusive of all in the operating team, and increases accountability of the surgeon. The CO2 used to distend the abdomen also facilitates retroperitoneal dissection planes, as shown in Figure 11.2, which may explain the reduced blood loss associated with the laparoscopic approach.
