ABSTRACT

This chapter will discuss “nonsurgical” ablation of epileptic tissue with respect to currently implemented techniques used to treat epileptic tissue or lesions frequently associated with seizures such as cerebral vascular malformations and tumors. Focal intracranial radiation is by far the most common of these techniques and will continue to play a major role in the treatment of seizures either directly or as a “side-effect” of treatment directed towards achieving other therapeutic goals such as AVM obliteration and tumor control. Hence, a firm understanding of the principles of stereotactic radiosurgery is necessary to appreciate its use in the treatment of these central nervous system disorders.
