Potential non-target organ toxicities of FGF-2 include neoangiogenesis, acceleration of atherosclerosis, and spread of malignancy (61,62). Neoangiogenesis in the retina is causally linked to macular degeneration and diabetic proliferative retinopathy, but studies reviewed in the sections above have failed to show an increase in either of these conditions.
