ABSTRACT

Posterior urethral distraction injuries most commonly result from high impact trauma to the pelvis and perineum. While penetrating injuries to the posterior urethra do occur, at least 90% are caused by blunt trauma from motor vehicle accidents, falls from heights, or occupational injuries that are of sufficient severity to cause pelvic fractures.1 Urethral injury is rare in the absence of a pelvic fracture but, conversely, urethral injuries are seen in only 3-25% of pelvic fracture cases.2
