ABSTRACT

Histamine, an endogenous biogenic amine with activity on various tissues and organs, was first chemically synthesized in 19071 and, on testing physiologically, it was found to exert activity on smooth muscles and vessels.2 Later, it was found that histamine can be extracted from a number of tissues and was liberated from cells in response to injury.3,4 Using the Greek word histos (tissue), the compound was named histamine or tissue amine.
