ABSTRACT

Introduction Day case management is appropriate for a wide range of the commoner paediatric surgical procedures (including orchidopexy). Children make excellent candidates for day surgery as they are usually fit, healthy and free of chronic disease. However, a common problem is the child presenting on the day of surgery with a snotty nose. Do you cancel the case or do you proceed? What are the potential risks? A discussion of this dilemma and other aspects of paediatric day case management are included in the case that follows.
