ABSTRACT

The apgar scores at delivery were 5 at 1 minute and 10 at 5 minutes. Immediately after delivery the baby was apnoeic and required a short period of bag and mask ventilation. Two unsuccessful attempts to pass a nasogastric tube were made. After the second attempt the nasogastric tube was left in situ and a chest X-ray taken showed it to be coiled up in the oesophagus; in addition gas was noted in the stomach. The infant was given vitamin K, made ‘nil by mouth’ and intravenous fluids were started. A transfer to a specialist paediatric surgical centre was then arranged which took place later the same day.
