ABSTRACT

Case history A 6-week-old baby boy presented to a large district general hospital (DGH) with a 1-week history of vomiting. Initially the vomiting episodes were only twice a day but for 2 days prior to admission he had vomited all feeds. Sometimes the vomits had projected across the room. The vomits did not contain bile. The baby was breast-fed. He was hungry and fed again immediately after vomiting. Occasionally the second feed was retained. The baby had not gained weight for 2 weeks. There had been fewer wet nappies in the last 24 hours. There was no pyrexia or diarrhoea. Further history, examination findings and results of investigations are shown in Table 3.1 below.
