ABSTRACT

Introduction With advances in obstetric and neonatal intensive care, more premature infants with lower gestational ages and lower birth weights are surviving.1 This leads to more of these infants requiring anaesthesia for surgery, including the repair of their inguinal hernias, a condition associated with increased prematurity.2 Although this may appear to be a simple procedure it actually presents a significant challenge to the health care service, clinicians and the infant itself. These are highlighted in the following case history.
