ABSTRACT

Introduction Cleft lip and/or palate is the most common congenital craniofacial malformation with an incidence of around 1 in 700 live births.

Although cleft lip/palate occurs most frequently as an isolated anomaly, it is well recognized that it may be associated with other congenital defects. A recent review1 of 616 babies with cleft lip/palates showed that 79% of these had isolated defects. Of these isolated cases, 85% of bilateral cleft lips and 70% of unilateral cleft lips were found in combination with a cleft palate.
