ABSTRACT

Major differences exist among gynaecologists worldwide with regard to the practice of or recommendation for prophylactic oophorectomy. For instance, in patients aged over 49 years who are undergoing hysterectomy, an average 75-84% of gynaecologists in Italy had performed a concurrent prophylactic oophorectomy, compared with only 33-51% in England (Table 13.1). However, two trends are noted worldwide: the recommendation for or performance of prophylactic oophorectomy increases as the patient’s age advances, and there is no agreement even for postmenopausal patients.
