ABSTRACT

Hysterectomy may be performed as a prophylactic measure against malignant or benign disorders.

Prophylactic hysterectomy for malignant diseases Hysterectomy should drastically reduce the risk of malignant disease affecting the uterine corpus and cervix

in selected cases. Against the background of effective and established screening procedures for diagnosing endometrial and cervical cancers, prophylactic hysterectomy does not appear to be of practical benefit. It is major surgery and should not be undertaken purely for prophylactic consideration, just as one does not consider mastectomy to prevent breast cancer even in women with a family history of breast cancer.
