ABSTRACT

Induced sputum is primarily a research tool. However, recent studies that focused on questions of direct clinical relevance have begun to identify a potential role for this technique in the everyday management of respiratory diseases. Based on current evidence, the use of induced sputum can be recommended for uncertain diagnosis of asthma, and chronic cough. Emerging evidence from studies in asthma suggests that repeated analysis of induced sputum might be able to improve asthma management by reducing the frequency of exacerbations.
