ABSTRACT

Uterine leiomyomas, or fibroids, are benign smooth muscle tumors and are the commonest pelvic tumor in women; it has been estimated that by the age of 40 approximately a third of women have at least one fibroid. Pathological studies show that they are present in 50-70% of hysterectomy specimens but around only 10% of hysterectomies are performed specifically because of fibroids1,2. This indicates that most women with fibroids are asymptomatic.
