ABSTRACT

Menopause is a natural phenomenon that occurs in all women as they age and enter their sixth decade of life. It is often preceded by irregular menstruation or perimenopause with great variability in cycle length1. While population studies with objective measurement of menstrual blood loss have shown that menstrual flow does not increase significantly nor does it get less as women get older, a common complaint in the perimenopausal years is that of unpredictable excessive bleeding2.This may be due to a greater frequency of anovular cycles. The term ‘perimenopausal menstrual chaos’ may be usefully applied.
