ABSTRACT

Critically ill children present to the Emergency Department (ED) requiring resuscitation. During or after this process they frequently need to be moved whilst closely monitored and/or dependent on cardiovascular and respiratory support. This move may be to another department in the hospital, such as the operating theatre or X-ray department, or to another hospital for specialist care, such as neurosurgery or pediatric intensive care if not available on site. In many ways the principles that apply to all of these scenarios are the same. They follow both from each other and from the recognition that transfer exposes the patient to risks (Box 31.1).
