Case 34. A Patient With Dyslipidemia, Coronary Heart Disease, And A History Of Statin Intolerance

The patient had previously discontinued treatment with simvastatin, atorvastatin, and pravastatin due to muscle pain. He developed generalized symmetric muscle stiffness and aches 3 days after starting each statin. His serum creatine kinase (CK) activity had gone up to as high as 1534 U/l (upper limit of reference range = 220 U/l). Symptoms resolved about 3 days after stopping each statin and the CK returned to normal about 1 week later.
