ABSTRACT

A 20-year-old Russian student was screened upon entry into an American university. He had a positive tuberculin skin test and, on chest radiograph, was found to have a right-sided pleural effusion. The effusion was tapped, and the culture grewMycobacterium tuberculosis resistant to isoniazid and streptomycin. When told of the results, he replied to the physician in dismay: ‘‘But, I’ve never been in prison! How can I have TB?’’
