ABSTRACT
Immune-mediated inflammatory processes usually occur in response to foreign antigens: immune cells recognize structures and molecular signals that are different from ‘‘self’’ (1). Under certain circumstances, however, such processes occur in the apparent absence of foreign antigens, and host tissue becomes involved by a destructive immune reaction, known as an autoimmune disease.
