I. INTRODUCTION A. The Scope of the Problem: Incidence, Cost, Sequelae Total hip arthroplasty has evolved to become an extremely successful procedure for the majority of patients. Those who experience no complications can expect dramatic improvement in their quality of life after surgery (1). Deep infection, unfortunately, remains one of the most serious complications for the patient and also has dramatic implications due to the significant burden that it imposes on the cost of health care delivery (2).
