ABSTRACT

Long-term care facilities (LTCFs) include nursing homes (NH), assistedliving facilities, and other facilities where chronic care is provided to residents. This chapter will mainly focus on NH when referring to LTCF. NH are

typically staffed with skilled health professionals that include nursing, physical and occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, dieticians, physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants, among others. The physician and often the nurse practitioner or physician assistant are the PCP responsible for making medical decisions in their setting. Infection, particularly urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and skin and soft tissue infections, in the LTCF is a common problem (1-3).
