ABSTRACT

Among the many aspects of health and well-being, sexual health is seldom discussed by the patient and physician unless there are medically related symptoms (e.g., sexually transmitted diseases) or there is severe disruption of sexual functioning related to physical or psychological illness. Humans are sexual beings, yet sexual health is often taken for granted. Sexuality is considered a private matter and not usually the domain of the physician’s office. Thus, most physicians have little experience discussing sexual health with their patients and are poorly prepared to address their sexual concerns.
