ABSTRACT

The inflammatory process in the airways or the lung parenchyma may be initiated, amplified, and ultimately modulated by a variety of factors. Proteins, such as cytokines, colony-stimulating factors, growth factors, and receptor antagonists; peptides; lipid mediators such as eicosanoids, platelet-activating factors, and lysophospholipids; and signaling molecules, such as nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide, all play roles in this process. How these signaling events are integrated over time is a subject of ongoing interest. This chapter will review mechanisms of NO interactions with lipid mediator generation involved in signaling. Special attention will be paid to potential NO modulation of airway lipid mediator generation.
