A principal goal of research into mechanisms of disease is to identify mediators that might be targeted as treatments. For example, inhibitors of pro-inflammatory mediators may improve the clinical outcomes of disease. Mediators of disease that do not have also have important functions in maintaining host health are particularly attractive therapeutic targets because their inhibition is unlikely to cause serious side effects.
