ABSTRACT

Appropriate decision-making in the treatment of displaced tuberosity fractures is based upon a thorough clinical examination and appropriate radiographic evaluation. A standard trauma series consisting of an anteroposterior and lateral view of the shoulder, obtained in the plane of the scapula, in addition to an axillary view will aid in determining the degree of fracture displacement (Fig. 1). If an axillary view is difficult to obtain due to the patient’s pain, a Velpeau axillary may be obtained. This is taken with the patient hyperextending approximately 308 over the x-ray table with the beam passing vertically from a superior to inferior position in relation to the shoulder (1) (Fig. 2).
