ABSTRACT

Posterior segment complications of LASIK are rare but visually significant. Myopes have a tendency to develop lattice degeneration, early posterior vitreous detachment, retinal breaks, and retinal detachment. Between 1.5% and 14% of myopic eyes may need some form of treatment for vitreoretinal pathologies before LASIK (1-3). In a retrospective study of about 30,000 eyes after LASIK, vitreoretinal complications were noted only in 0.06% of the eyes (2). However, in a prospective study, new vitreoretinal pathology after LASIK was reported in 2.5% of the eyes (3).
