ABSTRACT

Approximately 16% of the population will suffer from depression at any time during their lifetime.1 This lifetime prevalence will increase significantly with age, as well as with the existence of a co-occurring physical condition. The number of US citizens with diagnosed diabetes is projected to increase 165% from 11 million in 2000 to 29 million in 2050, with the largest percent increase occurring among those persons ≥ 75 years old (+271% in older women; +437% in older men).2
